On May 29-31, 2008, XACBank hosted the 11th MFC Conference, “Clients and Institutions: Growing Together,” in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The conference offered an opportunity to explore topics affecting microfinance throughout the MFC region, ranging from consumer protection and financial education issues, to the latest use of technology and innovative microfinance products, to social performance measurement. The MFC was joined in hosting this event by XacBank, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The conference focused on two major areas. Clients and their communities - ensuring lasting impact of microfinance through providing a wide range of financial products, strengthening development focus through integrating education and other non-financial services, developing policies to protect consumers of financial services; and Institutions and their stakeholders - overcoming key barriers for scaling up, reducing costs through new technologies, improving governance, supporting middle-range MFIs to identify their niches, pushing investment frontiers, bridging new partnerships. Technical workshops at the conference included sessions on microinsurance, best practices in social audit, affordable housing finance, and the emergence of the Chinese microfinance market.
